When to Go
The winter is best time to visit St Motiz because of all the outdoor and skiing activities. The assurance of snow and good weather, due to the height and southern aspect, provide ideal conditions for a long season and a unique wide range of winter sports opportunities offered to visitors.
Climate
The climate in St Moritz is moderate with no excessive heat, cold or humidity. From July to August the daytime temperature range is 18 to 28 °C and from January to February the range is -2 to 7 °C . In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C. Depending on the altitude, the temperature range may vary. It is highly recommended to visitors to pack a sweater, good walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a compact umbrella and/or a light rain coat.
Getting There
St. Moritz is situated at the center of Europe. It is often referred to as the "Crossroads of Europe", making travel to Switzerland very convenient. Many of Europe's rail lines, road passes and mountain tunnels transect Switzerland. This makes for ideal St. Moritz tours.
You can get to St Moritz by air through the international airports of Zurich and Milan. They are approximately 7-8 hours from the east coast of North America and less than 2 hours from London or Paris. Samedan Airport is St. Moritz's airport.
You can arrive in St Moritz by train as well. The rail service in Switzerland is pretty reliable and offers first and second class compartments. If you are interested in a scenic journey from Zurich, then the 4 hour trip by train will be satisfying. From Milan, the train travel time is about 5 hours. If you are entering St Mortiz by car, then you will find that it is easily accessible from many of the major European cities. You can estimate a 2 ½ hour trip from Zurich, a 2 hour trip from Milan or a 2 ½ hour trip from Innsbruck.
Budgeting
The Swiss currency is the Swiss franc, which is made up of 100 centimes or rappen. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Switzerland, but travelers checks are not. ATM's are easy to find in many locations.
St Moritz is a place for the rich and famous. It is not a very budget conscience vacation. Expect to pay more, but get better quality for your tours and service as well.
Food: If you happen to dine in the Chadafö Grill, you are looking at leaving around €80-€100 per person for your meal if you have a starter, grilled meat or fish and flaming dessert. However, you can try The Hotel Steffani (081-836-9696), which has a daily menu that can be very affordable-between €20 at lunch and €30 for dinner. It also houses the top Chinese restaurants in town, Le Mandarin, which is open for dinner and the daily menu costs are between €30-€60.
Accommodations: If you are lucky enough to get a booking for a cheap hotel or hostel, then you can expect to pay around Fr 43. However, if you can only book a regular, high priced hotel, such as "Badrutt's Palace", it will set you back around Fr 1000-1500.
Getting Around
Switzerland has a great public transport system that incorporates trains, buses, boats, funiculars and cable cars. The Swiss rail network, which covers 5000km is clean, reliable and frequent. You can always rent a car at one of the easily accessible car-rental agencies in most sizeable towns. Roads are well maintained, have good sign posts and generally are not too congested. Bicycles can be hired from most railway stations and returned to any station with a rental office. Do note though that you will need to be in top physical condition to get very far in St Moritz on a bike due to it's terrain. All the larger lakes are serviced by steamers, and rail passes are valid on most steamer routes
Dining
From elaborate restaurants to local taverns, St Mortiz offers you a taste of all types of exquisite cuisine. No matter where you choose to eat, there is one dining experience you should make sure you don't miss.
